Super Mario TCG - Goomba

Description

*EDIT*: I made some little but important changes to the card's layout: The text in now a lot bigger. So if the card would be printed in a size of 6.3 centimeters x 8.3 centimeters (I don't know how much that is in inches), which is around the same size as a card of Magic: The Gathering, the text would be perfectly readable. Yeah, I actually measured the card, the text, and all.

Also, I made the Goomba to have 2 HP instead of 1. I felt that, after so much thinking, and being gameplay-wise, it should be better if it had 2 HP. And I added from where Goombario's quote is from.

--------------------------------------
So here finally is! Goomba, The first card of my series called: "Super Mario Trading Card Game"! You know, I always wanted a true Mario TCG, so I decided to make one myself, why not?

There's a lot to tell here, where to start? Right, I made the card's template all by myself, with vectors, using CorelDRAW X4. Yes I have used vectors before believe it or not, is just that until recently I got CorelDRAW. Actually, the only things I didn't made myself are the coin at the top right, the mushroom in the middle to the left of Earth, and the shell almost at the bottom, but I vectorized them. Yeah I went a bit lazy with that.

You see how the card is green and there says "Earth"? Right, there are more templates for the other elements: a red one for the fire cards, dark blue for water, light blue for air, yellow for light, and purple for darkness. I already made them all. Also, notice the letter's fount I found! If you can't tell what is it, is the same font used in general texts in the Paper Mario games. It's called Hey Gorgeous.

Now, for my comments on the actual hand drawn picture... well there's not much to say, except that, well yeah, I kinda like how the shading looks, but I noticed (too late to correct them) a LOT of errors. Bad perspective is bad, unless that bush to the left of the pipe is XBOX HUEG. I also have NO IDEA where the light source is, since the shade positions really don't make sense. ...I'll upload the whole picture alone later so you can see better what I'm talking about.

...I guess I was too eager to finish the card already, so I rushed a bit while doing the image, and I'm out of practice. Hopefully this little project of mine will make me draw a lot more and I'll be on practice again soon.

Now I'll explain the card by itself and a bit of the game rules. Yeah, haha, I already thought up a whole rule and gameplay system for this things. Actually, anyone who wants to make a card game HAVES to think up in a rule and gameplay system before doing anything else. So if you really aren't interested at all in learning about the TCG's gameplay rules and stuff, you can stop reading here. ;P

----------------GAMEPLAY RULES--------------------

First, at the top left corner of the card there is the card's Name obviously. To the right of the Name there is the card's Coin Cost, which obviously is the number of Coins you need to pay before you can play the card. Cards have different Coin Costs depending on how useful they are, of course that better cards are always more expensive. Also, if you defeat an opponent's character, you'll win the character's cost in Coins and add it to your Coin Bank.

The Coin Bank is an imaginary area where you keep all your Coins for later uses. Each player starts the game with 1 Coin, and wins 1 Coin at the beginning of each turn.

Right under the card's Illustration, at the left you'll see the card's Type. There are 3 main Types of cards: Characters, Items and Magics. A Character will remain in play and they can attack and be attacked. An Item also will remain in play (in some cases) and they can be used later for an effect in the game to happen, and they are gone after one use unless specified otherwise. A Magic is immediately gone after one use unless specified otherwise, they are played directly from your hand for an effect in the game to happen, and they don't cost Coins, they cost FP (Flower Points). I'll talk about FP later (I'm still not sure if I should implement FP into the game).

In this case, the card is a Character as you can see. Sometimes cards have Sub-types (a Chestnut in this case, the Subtype for every Goomba), specially the Character cards, but an Item or Magic card may have a Sub-type, too, like for example the Block Sub-type for some Items. This is quite important since usually the main way for a card to refer to another card is by its Sub-type.

To the right of the Type and Sub-type you see the card's Element's icon and its Element. This is important because of the fourth Type of card, the Power Ups.

Power Ups look different from all the other cards (I'll eventually submit them), they are truly essential since you can't play a card by just paying it's Coin Cost, you will also need a Power Up card to play the desired Card, and the card's Element depends on what Power Up you need to play the card. They are Mushroom for Earth cards, Fire Flower for Fire, Ice Flower for Water, Cloud for Air, Power Star for Light, and Ztar for Darkness. You can put from your hand into play, without paying any kind of costs, one Power Up each turn if you have any. You also need to flip down a Power Up to play a card and you'll unflip it at the beginning of your turns, so that means that you can only play one card per Power Up (all this Power Up business will prevent from seeing many card decks with many mixed up elements, since it's better to build your deck with a single or just two or three elements, so you can manage your Power Ups better and have better chances to play what you want when you want. It will also prevent from players to play everything in a single turn).

To the right of the Element there is the Rarity and Expansion's Icon, which will be different depending on the current expansion (a pixelated classic Mushroom for the first one) and will also determine the card's rarity depending on it's color. Will be black for common cards, silver for uncommon cards, and golden for rare cards. Pretty much like Magic: The Gathering cards (I TOTALLY copied that from their format).

Under the Type, Element and Rarity Icon, there is the text zone, where skills and traits of the character, or where what the card does, is written. In this case the character is Groundbound, just meaning that it walks on the ground (since there are also Airbound characters). Groundbound Characters can't reach to attack Airbound ones unless specified otherwise.

Sometimes, under the skills, traits and effects, you'll find written in Times New Roman the Flavor Text. The Flavor Text doesn't affect the gameplay in any ways, it's mostly just for the amusement factor, and it may be a quote or some funny or interesting info of the card's subject.

Under that, if the card is a Character, you'll find the HP (Heart Points), which is the Character's total life points (Most of Goombas sadly are defeated by one hit). Each time a character takes damage, put that many Damage Counters on it (Damage Counters may be imaginary points or physical little objects that you put on the card, like clips for example, that tell how much damage the Character has), and if it has the same or more Damage Counters than its HP, the Character is defeated and put into your zone of The Underwhere. The Underwhere is where every card is gone after being defeated or used.

To the right of the HP it's the Character's POW or Attack Power, which tells how much damage the character does when attacking. To the right of that it's the Character's DEF or Defense Power, which tells how much damage is not done to the Character when attacked.

And finally, at the bottom left of the card there is the artist's name and the Copyrights at the bottom right. I wanted this to look somewhat professional.

-----END OF GAMEPLAY RULES (FOR NOW)-----

Phew! I hope that wasn't a bit too much, and there are still things about the rules to explain! Also, I absolutely don't blame you if you didn't read anything, just... just stare at the picture!

This card looks amazing. I can't believe that there isn't an official Mario TCG, though!
